Companies face challenges at every stage of growth after startup. Startups usually go through a "death valley" period in the third to fifth year, when even if they are successful in product research and development, they face the risk of business failure due to funding difficulties. In order to overcome the initial difficulties and look towards a mid-sized company, it is necessary to have the power of an organization rather than a single person. It is necessary to continue R&D and innovation, as well as management improvement, to climb the growth ladder.

Gyeongnam Technopark (CEO Kim Jung-hwan, hereinafter referred to as Gyeongnam TP), the Ministry of SMEs and Startups, and Gyeongnam Province are supporting the step-by-step growth of these companies in an integrated and customized manner, rather than individually, through the 'Growth Ladder Support Project'. The project targets companies with great growth potential in Gyeongnam and supports up to 5 billion won per company in each stage, including △Post-BI (post-business incubation), △innovative companies, △star companies, △regional innovation leaders, △export beginners, and △investment ecosystems, to help them grow. This year, we look at the results of the program and the growth potential of individual business models in five installments.

◇'POST-BI' from potential to actual growth = The first step of the growth ladder support program is the 'POST-BI' program, which targets companies with less than 3 to 7 years of experience. BI stands for business incubation, and POST stands for the next stage of growth after the initial incubation. The detailed program consisted of support for  △prototype production,  △marketing,  △patent and certification, and up to 20 million won per company. As a result of this year's program, four companies were selected as excellent companies,
including  △Doulpipty,  △Shinpaper,  △MST, and  △JD.

Jinju JD - Waterdrone Development
Specializing in Fish Farm Management
Aging Fishermen
Overcoming vessel cost challenges
Securing excellence, including technology patents

◇'Water drones' not air drones in the ocean = JD (CEO Park Joong-gun) is a Jinju-based company that started out in the shipbuilding design business and is now focusing on developing multipurpose water drones. JD's water drones are specialized in fish farm management. Previously, fish farm management was carried out using ships, but the aging of fishermen and the increasing cost burden are problems that can be overcome with a drone. It can also solve the problem that aerial drones have limitations in measuring water temperature and salinity. In addition, the 1-2 meter class water drones are small compared to conventional ships (5-6 meters), so there is less risk of safety accidents. J.D.'s linear design technology allows the drone to recover itself if it capsizes. This allows the drone to operate in all weather conditions. Its product line includes offshore aquaculture monitoring drones, smart marine survey drones, and marine garbage collection drones.

J.D. has secured technological excellence and product stability with 8 domestic patents, 8 registered patents, and 2 international patents (PCTs). J.D. has also been awarded the Minister of SMEs and Startups Award in 2020 and the Meritorious Person Award for Revitalizing SMEs and Startups in 2022.

J.D. Waterdrone is exported to Malaysia, Cambodia, and other countries, and has exported a Water drone monitoring system to Vietnam.

"Next year, we plan to build a production facility in the Jinju District of Gyeongnam Aviation National Industrial Complex," said Park Joong-gun. "We will establish ourselves as a drone development company specializing in the marine and ecosystem industries."
